Be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources.

Learning Outcome 2
Over the course of English 110, a goal to work forward to was to be able to integrate their ideas with those of others using summary, paraphrase, quotation, analysis, and synthesis of relevant sources. I was able to work towards this goal by practicing within my essays. To efficiently reach this goal, I had to practice integrating and using sources. For my essays, I would make a claim, the “I say” piece of my essays. In order to prove my point, I had to do research into different sources to find a quote that revealed my claim to be correct, this being the “they say” portion of my analysis. When I first began this course, the use of sources seemed easy to me but I did not know that I was doing it like a student writer compared to an experienced writer. I had to learn how to change the way I integrated sources to strengthen them. I learned to introduce the source and give it credibility before creating a quotation from it. Before learning this information, the integration of quotes being used were not up to the level they should have been. After reviewing the book, “The Little Seagull” and “They say, I say” I found different ways I could do this that would strengthen my essay. For example, in my social media essay I stated, “ Jean M. Twenge, author of The Atlantic, “Have Smartphones Destroyed a Generation?” disagrees,” with the claim I made. I then continued to explain that, “All screen activities are linked to less happiness, and all non screen activities are linked to more happiness” (Twenge 7). These are examples of my ability to correctly integrate and introduce sources, which I have learned and improved over this course.
