Learning Outcomes 5 and 6
The learning outcomes five and six address the ability to document their work using appropriate conventions (MLA) and the ability to control sentence-level error (grammar, punctuation, spelling). These learning outcomes were mastered after the completion of many essays from this course. From the beginning of this course, I knew I needed to work on my sentence-level error along with other things. Having a peer edit my essays helped me improve and see the errors in my essays. Along with having another set of eyes review my essays, reading the book “The Little Seagull” helped me figure out how to fix the errors after seeing which needed to be improved. I was able to find the section needed from the book and apply the learned information to my essay. Along with learning to expand and revise my sentence level errors, I improved on my MLA citations. An example of this comes from my social media essay. For my rough draft of this essay, my works cited page was inaccurate and missing information but after reviewing the book, I was able to properly generate a works cited page. After learning to do this correctly, I applied it to my other essays. I also was able to efficiently cite my sources using MLA format. For example, when citing my sources from previous essays and drafts, I would quote and forget to cite or include the proper citation. For example, my rough draft of the social media essay consisted of a quote from Susan Greenfield that did not have any citation at the end. It lacked the authors last name and page number, for example, (Greenfield, 6). For the final draft, I learned to add a citation for example after quoting Greenfield, I wrote (Greenfield 114). Along with MLA citations, I was able to recognize and correct things such as comma splices, run-on sentences, grammar mistakes, and more.
