The life of a college nursing student
Big Data can be used to improve the criminal justice field. By using big data, people involved within this field are able to track and find those already involved in the criminal justice system. The data can help the workers track a person who committed a crime and it can help them predict if they are more likely to commit one again. The use of big data can greatly improve the effects of the criminal justice system.
After reviewing the Big Data Resources page, I carefully planned what my idea was going to be and how I would evolve this. After listening to some TED Talks, my mind shifted on the idea of big data. The talks and reviews shifted my way of thinking of big data, now it concerns me. After watching the TED Talk by Alessandro Acquisti, privacy became an issue. The use of facial recognition is an invasion of privacy. Since computers are more developed and are more able to recognize facial features along with other features, it takes away from ones privacy. It is now possible to put a name to an anonymous face due to social media, which can be invading to people’s privacy. Data can also be used to predict a social security nunber which is a big part of one’s identity, which is very concerning. Another article I might use is the Washington Post, “Red Feed, Blue Feed,” which we viewed in class. This was interesting because it is forming two different groups and posts for the individuals for each groups. For example, in the Red group, it is intended for conservatives, so they would view those types of posts. While the blue feed is intended for liberals so they would see a post related to the same topic as the red but explained in a different way, creating different outcomes. Big data is forming stronger and specific views for specific types of people. This is concerning because they have access to be able to see which posts are for which type of people. The article, “Is It Even Possible To Protect Your Privacy On Facebook?” raised concerns for me as it made me realize that we do not have privacy on social media. The article explains how one can spend all day trying to make their facebook private but some how their views, personal information, beliefs and more are still being recorded and remembered. It is concerning because now anybody could get that information and that is not what the user intended for. After reviewing the Big Data Resources page, I believe the strength of privacy that one truly gets on social media and technology is concerning.
