TED Talk Big Data

In the Ted Talk given by Kenneth Cukier, he addresses the idea of data and how it is incorporated in our lives today. Cukier informs the audience of the importance of data in our everyday lives by saying it is, “the only way this planet is going to deal with its global challenges” ( 138). Data helps inform people of certain things which guides them to changes. An example of this is medical care or energy as shown in the TED Talk.  Cukier explains the positivity linked with more data use. He does this by linking it with technology. One example I think would be very helpful is installing senses into cars which could use data to predict a car accident. I think this use of data could be very helpful and potentially save lives.  He mentions how big data is going to be voluntary and respect privacy, as that was an issue before. I think that it is a very good thing so people do not get angry about the idea of it invading their personal life. I think big data could be very influential on the world and its constant advancements.

Diary of My Phone

Dear Diary,

Every morning, I am used to wake you up very early to start your day. I start at around 8:00 in the morning and am used all day long until about midnight! I hardly catch a break. I am constantly being view, moved, picked up or dropped, it gets very tiring. I hold a lot of information and sometimes I stall for a moment but everybody just gets mad at me.  I have to be charged frequently due to how much I am used on a daily basis. I am always being rushed for everything, whether it is sending messages, getting signal, viewing social media or even answering a call. Sometimes, I need a break for a little while but I can never seem to get one now a days. Lately, I am used from sunset to sunrise. Sometimes, it may be good to let me rest while you do too.

Don’t even get me started with the Netflix, videos and music. Once one of those comes on, I know I am never going to see the end of it. I play Netflix constantly, using up my storage just to play  the same episodes of Grey’s Anatomy as I did last month. It is exhausting and devastating seeing my storage used up for something so repetitive. The music played from me is annoying and half of the songs aren’t even played, they just sit there and take life away from me. After a long day at school, you come home lay in bed and watch Netflix…for hours. Sometimes you even fall asleep while watching, that exhausts me. I am up all night long and have to wake you up bright and early for another day of classes.

Response to Greenfield

I agree with Greenfield that narcissism is increased due to social media factors based on my experiences with social media in a social, school environment. Resulting from my experiences, I noticed that when teens have more friends or likes on social media, they begin to believe they are superior to others and develop a narcissistic lifestyle. The number of friends and likes is believed to show “popularity” within the generation. Once teens get the feeling that they are superior, they may become narcissistic and it becomes hazardous to themselves and others around them.
